What is better Planet Side or Half-Life2?
I never really tried planet side because it costs money per month but I saw a video and it looks awesome!
But I think Hl2 is better because it can't die because of all these mods..

DISCUSS!

half life 2 easily. planetside seems cool until you play it and reallize that there are only 4 (maybe 6, been out of the game for a while) base layouts so you're attacking a base then defending a base then you run to defend a base that looks exactly the same and it gets monotonous.
battleframes kill a lot of the fun in the game by being high powered ownage machines. it was fun for a lil bit but hl2 is better by far.

Yes, yes ... Half-Life can't die, I played six years hl1 and I wasn't tired...
And when the 2 come out I was like  OMFGZORZ ALREADY OUT?

Both good. HL2 just pwns.

But PS is also good, but my PC was too gobshite too run it at the time.

Planetside was, for a time, the best gaming experience I could have. It is the closest I've ever been to matching the thrill of being on exercise with the military (way above Operation Flashpoint, Ghost Recon, Raven Shielde et al) because you are genuinely part of a larger operation. It doesn't matter that the base layouts are mostly the same - that just makes it easier to formulate good tactics. But if you're getting pounded to shit by enemy armour, and the commander behind calls in some bombers to save you - that's good gaming.

Pity I don't have the time to commit to it.

Yes, it was a legend. It ran really slow all the time tho. But who cares.

i started playing this again, i definitely forgot how much it owns. you're right JLF the tactics and strategy in this game are really cool, but the game sucks if you're not in an organized squad with a bunch of cool people to play with. VS forever!

Why are these two games even being compared? Granted, they're both first person shooters, but that's where the similarities end. PlanetSide and HL2 are so wildly different, comparing them is like comparing apples and jelly fish.

PlanetSide is an amazing game, but I think it was just before its time. It doesn't appeal to most gamers, because it isn't mindless non-stop frag action.

To be honest, I was extremely dissapointed with the HL2 single player. I never really felt like I was having fun, as everything I was doing seemed like a chore which put me on the path to completing another chore. The game had you travel to one area, talk to someone, have them send you somewhere else, to have someone else send me to somewhere else. The characters were annoying, and I wouldn't cared if they were all wiped out in the first few moments of the game. Alot of it just didn't make sense either. At the end of HL, you went in to a sleep (sorta). Years later, when HL2 starts, you're awakened.. but somehow everyone already knew you were coming? The story was so underexplained it was ridiculous, regardless of whether Valve was trying to keep the whole background mysterious. No excuse for that.

I dunno, HL2 was probably one of the most overhyped games ever. The mod community is promising though. But yea, PlanetSide and HL2 back-to-back comparisons don't make sense, so don't do it.

hl2 was not overhyped. it was and still is a great game. (not quite as fun as hl1, but more graphically sound)

jlf
05-18-2005, 01:08 PM
It doesn't matter how good it was - it is the most hyped game ever (whether it was over-hyped or not is a different matter). People had been guessing about it for four years, suddenly we all see a scan of a crowbar and shadow in the shape of a 2. When the first set of videos came out, the internet went wild. Then we had the delays, the source code theft, the VU vs Valve lawsuit, another set of videos. In the nineteen months between announcement and release, everybody was going absolutely crazy about a game that had no set (reliable) release date.

I got into HL2 because a friend said it was amazing, sure the first few levels were cool, seeing as I had never played HL before, but it got a tad repetitive, HL2DM is just too mindless for me, people say CS:S sucks but currently it's all I play apart from the mods since CS at least has some kind of strategy behind it, even if it is crap. The original game isn't the best FPS I've played (sure its got the graphics) but the mods are looking very promising.

Everybody say CS:S sux because it's in beta. If they were at the last version, CS:S would own CS totally.

I actually find it semi-decent.

entRo
05-21-2005, 11:07 AM
Yea, it's semi-decent, but as a sequel to Counter-Strike, the most popular multiplayer FPS (and I'd argue, the best), decent is totally unacceptable. If they couldn't have retained the sharp responsiveness of CS, they never should have even bothered with CS:S at all.

As far as HL2 being overhyped, that's just my opinion. The trainstation level totally sucked me in to the atmosphere, but when I got to the first part with the airboat, it felt cliche and cheesy, and then totally downhill from there. Lots of games are throwing vehicles in to the mix now, even if it doesn't fit. UT with vehicles? What the fuck? Who saw that coming? I endured enough nonsense with the airboat, and then they're like "lolol get in this car", so I do it, and the rest of the time spent in the buggy totally sucks ass. Control over the antlions in the prison felt gimmicky and not really necessary. The Vortiguants said I needed the antlions to survive, but I could have easily made my way through the prison on my own, and the game even puts you in more difficult situations later on with no help.

The majority of HL2 just felt like filler. Yeah, we get it, the Combine are hunting us, and they're easy to kill 'cause they're stupid and we're some sort of ultra-warrior. Got it. Instead of having me kill the same guys over and over, why not tell me why I'm killing them and why they're so pissed off?

Such a let down. Gman was extra cool though.

Warrior2k

We learnt enough about the Synth throughout the game.

Highway 17 was my favourite chapter of the game... I didn't mind the vehicles at all, in fact I enjoyed them. Instead of "You have this vehicle because it has a big gun on it, you have to travel 200 metres", it was a tool to aid you in what was probably a journey of several miles.

The first thing I ever did in ravenholm was pick up that god forsaken ravenholm sign lieng on the ground, walked over to that lower torso hanging from the tree and played myself some baseball practice. This was at my friends house before I got the game myself. If anyone has not yet done tihs you need to load up hl2 right now and do it: I hit the morbid legs so hard they flew up into the wildly branching tree ... and went INSANE!! The collisions from all the branches (which shouldn't even be there imo) cause the legs to fly all over the area!! they went absolutely nuts!! it was one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen!

Ang guess what, I enjoyed hl2; I loved it! Ya, the story line sucked, but you know what there was no mistake there. Valve didn't say oops look what we did, we barked the storyline! You are thrown into the midst of a desperate war as a legendary fighter and as to add to hl1's fabled sense of reality (eg. no cut scenes, you are Gordon) you are left clueless. Everyone you see assumes you know what was going on. You wouldn't explain 9/11 to a soldier in Iraq, and you wouldn't explain the 7 hour war (was it 7? it's been so long since I thought about this stuff) to a member of the resistance.

Altho I do have to argue with the much earlier comment that hl2 is the most hyped game ever. Back before either was released, you walk down the hall of the local high school (since that's the targeted age group) and ask any of the students if they have heard of halo 2 or half-life 2, a LOT, in fact MOST of them haven't heard of half-life 2.

How common is it to have to explain what half-life 2 is to someone because they have just briefly heard of it or heard nothing of it? But how common is it to have to explain halo 2(your parents/grandparents don't count)?

Holy crap this is a long post. Sorry guys :(

I couldnt of been more pleased with hl2. They did leave alot of story line out of the game yes. but u listen to dr.breen and read some of the things on wall and stuff like that u find out alot of mis placed story line.
eg one thing that is easy to find out, is why there are no children in the playground near the start of the game, it is because the combine have put force fieds up that stop people being to re-produce. One of the harder things to find out, is what the combine actually are and how they got there. The arive at the world hl2 is set by accident. Dr.breen opens up a portal to find new life for good reasons (like the portal in hl1 how all the aliens get there) but the combine (an alien race) use this one portal to make lots and invade the world hl2 is set in. The actual combine race u only see a few glimpses of (that big fat thing that breen is talking to) the masked gimped things are not infact combine, they are human.
The combine give the humans they require two choices. be a corupt policemen or a stalker. The humans that are chosen to be policemen go through genetic engerneering and then are sent into service. If you refuse to be a policemen u become a stalker, what be a stalker>? i hear u say. Stalkers are those things u see walking around at the end of the game when ur in that container that takes u around novaprospeckt. Stalkers are the lowest forms of human life that exist, if u are to become a stalker all ur limbs are removed and your vital organs also. Once you have admited loyalty to the combine u will then be granted to have ur limbs replaced with metal ones, and u are now a slave/mechanic for novaprospekt/combine HQ.

Please forgive any poor puntuation, and enjoy :)

YeTi, the majority of your post explaining the story line was speculation at best. The stalker's are never even talked about anywhere in the game, so I think it's pretty safe to assume that information came straight out of your ass.

No children? Well, right, humans can't reproduce, but that doesn't make children die off. Whatever happened to them was never explained, and it could have just been because Valve got lazy.

I listened to all of what Dr. Breen said, checked out posters (which hold little to no real information), and no one ever says anything about how the combine arrived, or why.

Point is, don't make stuff up. It doesn't make you any cooler.

I thought it was kinda obvious what was going on. There are those newspapers that tell you. After the Black Mesa incident, the Combine used the portals to attack earth in the "Portal Storms" and there was a 7 hour was against earth, destroying the United Nations building etc. After which earth surrended, Breen was declared interim Administrator or something and the combine hearded everyone into the cities. Then a while later Gorden pops back on the scene: HL2.
