How about a map which is quite wide and long beyond the spawns, so any base built wouldn't have any natural barriers, and would have to be a proper fort rather than just a wall?

I'm thinking each team could spawn on a small hill, with an item spawner, an ammo box and an immobile flag, and then they'd have to defend the flag from all sides? With enough cover and some fog the enemy could probably sneak around and harass weaker parts of the base.

Satellite forts and bunkers and things might become quite important.

I'm thinking of a sort of celtic theme, with standing stones and crappy dry stone walls to hide behind, and maybe some trees - maybe the map could be surrounded by a forest (though lots of trees might be a system hog).

Possibly the ball could be somehow magic related, and so could the item spawner.

That's a pretty neat idea. If you don't mind, I might give it a try.

Don't mind at all, saves me the bother . I've drawn a totally abysmal drawing in photoshop if it'll help:

It's just a vague concept, not precisely how I was going to lay it out.

Haha, sounds quite specific, you just need to say what part now.

It's the top bit with the laces and the tongue, going right down to the toe, with a crater for the bit where you put your foot in. The crater could be a volcano, or the site of a meteor strike. There should definately be a gap in the toe where a hole's worn through, and you can see an odour eater made of some sort of moss. The laces would be hard to do.

I might have a go at a 360 map myself as well. Can't hurt to have more than one, and I'll have nothing to do soon anyway .

item spawners .. EW.. they tend to A) let people just spam and lag up servers
B) give the side that spawns stuff faster a terrible advantage.

but this is a good map idea..

Item spawners are meant to reduce lag. When the limit is set to the amount of peices you'd have on the map anyway, the upper limit of the lag is the same as it would have been. And you can't spawn faster than the other team because the buttons have a reset time.

Nice map, but I was thinking more and more interesting cover, walls , trees, rocks, maybe a road with hedges, and definately partially-toppled standing stones .

The idea of people spawning outside of the obvious build area is one which needs to be discussed. On one hand, it means people have to have some kind of enterance to get in by, and may potentially make bunkers and satellite forts and things seem less remote and pointless, but on the other hand, it could piss people off if they have to run a long way just to get to their fort, and it may allow spawn raping.

I'm not keen on build walls, I like to see what the other team is doing. Even having a barrier reduces your freedom... surely building things too far away from your spawn is stupid anyway? Though the fort hills would definately have to have func_fortsites on them.

The peices should definately spawn on top of the hill, wherever the buttons are. I had some sort of arcane druidic markings or something in mind.

There will be a CVAR in v2 for server admins to limit the number of blocks that each team can spawn to a level that their server can cope with.
