Default My server problems, Advice please

Hi all i have been running a temp server here and there at points, but the one i just set up today sucked really badly; just wondering if people could lend some techincal advice.
btw, if you have been on my server b4 it just called 'cellarmations server'

Firstly i know a temp server on a home pc isnt great but its the best option i have.

I have two computers one is about 1.3mhz and the other is much faster at 2.6mhz i think. I have 512kb broadband and upload is usually quite good.

I have hosted from both machines at times and it was ok, on the faster machine it was good, however i prefur to use the slower machine where i can as the faster machine is not in a good place. So i tried setting up a dedicated server on the faster machine and joining from the slower one. This worked and people joined, however every so often i had major ping spikes i mean like 999 from ususally below 100.
This never happened when i hosted singually from one of the machines, has anyone got any idea why this was happening, is a dedicated server a bad idea on windows? was it to do with to much traffic on my local network? any ideas/advice?

How many players?!?!

On a home connection - there is a limit of maybe... 6 people at max that could safely play.

But make sure you don't have any programs auto-updating in the background or anything like that at all... that can affect it if ur not careful or aware of it.

Go here and tell me your upload speed. I fear that with only a 512 kbit download you might only have a 128 or so kbit upload.

You need at least 5Kb/s Upload and 5kb/s download per players

128kbps upload -> 16Kb/s Max Upload -> 3 internet player max... So 4 players if you play with another local computer

512kbps upload -> 64Kb/s Max upload -> 12 player max(in theory)...

But, with personnal DSL connection, if you use the integrity of your upload speed, your download speed will be decrease a lot...

So if you upload at 50kb/s on a 4096/512 DSL connection(mine), you probably can't download at more then 30/40 kb/s(500kb/s if not uploading)

-> For a 4096/512, set server to 10 players max, 8 for SF(asking more)...
-> For a 512/128, 4 players will work, but a little bit laggy...

I ever try with 12 players on my 4096/512 connection but coming laggy after 10 players on CSS and 8 players on SF.

Source Dedicated Server can run nice on a P4 1.4Ghz 512Mo PC133, i ever try it. But i usually use a 1700XP with 512Mo DDR 266 for server plugin test(working a little bit better, but not need more).

And never play on the same computer then the dedicated server, cause the server will be really laggy(tried on a Athlon 64 3200 with 1go DDR 400)

This is the output i got from the test.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 456 kbps (57 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 207 kbps (25.9 KB/sec transfer rate)

I tried playing with 6 players, in fairness this is the most i have ever played with. I normally only go for 4 players. But it was amazingly laggy compared to useing only one computer. I thought using two would make things better not worse. Any ideas? With these specs whats my limits, (i used the new york test but i am actually from the UK)
